Family Hike from Riverbend Park to Great Falls Park

August 27, 2017

Hiking is a great healthy and free family activity. One of our favorite family-friendly local hiking trails in Northern Virginia is the trail from Riverbend Park to Great Falls National Park.  This hike from the Riverbend Visitors Area to the Great Falls Visitors Area is about 1.25 miles.  You can view the Falls before turning around and hiking back to Riverbend, making it a 2.5 mile hike.  You could also make it more challenging by continuing to a different trail in Great Falls Park before hiking back to Riverbend Park.

It is very easy to find the trail from the Riverbend Park parking lot. The trail is mostly flat with some climbing required in a few spots.  There are a few rocky areas, but it is definitely possible to hike this trail while wearing a baby or toddler carrier.

The views of the Potomac and wildlife along the trail are scenic and peaceful.  We usually see frogs, birds, and deer.

And of course the Great Falls themselves are gorgeous. Not a bad halfway place to rest!

Pros:

  • The parking is free at Riverbend Park (compared to a small parking fee at Great Falls) and there usually is not a long line for parking.
  • Public restrooms at Riverbend Park and Great Falls Park.
  • Places to picnic and relax at Riverbend Park and Great Falls Park.
  • Both parks have informative visitor centers with interesting exhibits.

Cons:

  • The trail is narrow so you cannot bring a stroller.
  • There is some climbing required (some rocky inclines but you don't need to use your hands).
  • The trail can get flooded and muddy during the Winter/Spring.
  • The trail can get crowded sometimes, especially at the Great Falls area.

If you are looking for a free family activity, I recommend checking out this kid-friendly hike in Northern Virginia.  Fall is a great time to visit!
